The picture shows me performing a traditional Indian dance. We have many different festivals in India with associated dance styles. In this picture, you can see the dance performed with Navratri. For this dance, we use the sticks you see in the picture. It is performed with a group of people, accompanied by garba musi
The beauty of this dance is that it belongs to the festival Navratri. Navratri is a nine-day festival. Therefore, this allows me to perform this dance daily with friends for nine days straight in a circle and I love that. We dance in a group, sometimes with solos, and we move in a circle. We also use sticks to clap along with the beat, adding rhythm and energy to the dance. The music also makes it special because you only hear it during these nine days a year, like Christmas music in the Netherlands.
Dancing makes me really happy. Apart from that, it is also very relaxing for me and really motivating. It boosts my self-confidence. When I feel less motivated or less confident, listening to this music and dancing recharges me. For example, if I make a mistake that impacts a colleague’s work, I may feel unmotivated and wonder why I made the mistake in the first place. But dancing allows me to recharge and remind myself that it’s OK. I tell myself, “Learn from it, don’t repeat it. Mistakes happen to everyone”. Dancing helps me reset, enjoy the moment and start the next day fresh.
There are Indian communities in the Netherlands that celebrate festivals like Holi and Diwali. I join these communities during these festivals and take part in the dances. For example, I practiced a dance for Diwali with a group of Indian women, and we performed together during the celebration.
I work as a test engineer, and I get a lot of satisfaction from finding errors in developers’ work because it improves the final product. In a way, it’s similar to dancing. Just like with dancing, I enjoy working together to create something beautiful. I see it as moving in sync with the developers, collaborating to make something great.
I enjoy working collaboratively, have good analytical skills and strong problem-solving abilities. These qualities help me both in my Test Engineer work and in my dancing.
