Keylane participated in the J-Fall Conference 2024; showcasing our commitment to continuous learning and innovation.
Through the Keylane Academy and our support for Keylaners to attend leading tech events; we empower colleagues to grow beyond the office and stay inspired in their fields of expertise.
The spirit of innovation was on full display at J-Fall 2024; A conference offering tons of inspiration and food-for-thought for our attending developers. Additionally, the opportunity to network with the wider development community.
NLJUG organizes J-Fall; the largest annual Java conference in the Netherlands. Pathé Ede cinema hosted the event. A cozy location (think big screens and reclining seats) with a packed itinerary of expert talks on both Java and general software development topics.
The itinerary includes more than fifty sessions to choose from; ensuring there was something for every developer. There were also plenty of company booths to explore, lunch, drinks, and the always-welcome Dutch borrel!
Due to the wide range of talks, Keylane attendees were free to set their own schedules. Consequently, this gave them the flexibility to attend talks on the topics and subjects that interested them the most.
During the event, a talk which stood out was “Confessions of a Shortcut-a-holic” by Guus de Wit; A practical talk on how small optimisations can lead to big results.
Guus shared how he overcame severe RSI by rethinking his keyboard usage. From remapping keys using AutoHotKey, to creating dual-function buttons and switching to a split keyboard. His changes led to a more ergonomic and efficient way of working.
He also clarified that he experimented with alternative keyboard layouts such as Colemak. However, he still advised against abandoning QWERTY entirely, largely because of it’s widespread use and adoption.
Overall, the sentiment of his talk was: explore, experiment, and adapt – but don’t reinvent the wheel unless you need to.

Events such as J-Fall do not stop at offering industry insights and inspiration. They also remind us that a commitment to continuous improvement and problem-solving is the fuel to meaningful innovation.
For our Keylaners who attended J-Fall, this was also a chance to challenge and be challenged, to learn, and to bring back new insights and energy.
