Jasper – Software Engineer

Keylane |

My name is Jasper and I have been working as a software engineer at Keylane for two years at the Product Development department in Utrecht.

After studying physics, I wanted to do something in a different direction. I knew Keylane from a company drink organised by my study association. Once I graduated, the ball started rolling and I started working at Keylane as a software engineer.

Lots of room to learn

I did not have much experience with programming yet, but I got a lot of time to learn it. My mentor helped me with that and worked at lot together in the beginning. There are also a lot of courses that help you on your way, such as the courses ‘Framework’, ‘Data Modelling’ and ‘SQL’. And in the meantime I can say that I’ve got it all under control.

We mainly program in Java, where we build our application. We also use JavaScript for the front end and SQL to get data in and out of the database. What really appeals to me is that when you get started you do not just program in Java. You also have the option to specialize in for example queries in SQL.

Last summer I had one of my best assignments so far. We had to make uploads in the claim form possible. This means that when you report a damage to one of our clients, you can upload a photo or receipt as proof through the claim form. This is then stored and processed in our database. And that was a big challenge, it touches a lot of places in the code. It is an interesting process and fun to work on.

When I started at Keylane I immediately indicated that I would like to go abroad. I was told that it was possible to go to India. To me that sounded very interesting!

Last year I spent two months with a colleague in Kolkata to supervise external developers. That was really cool! And soon I will probably go again, but this time to Hyderabad.

Hard work and Friday afternoon drinks

When I think of Keylane, I think of a young and ambitious team. We are a young group in which many initiatives are taken. The junior employees who have been working there for less than a year are also being actively involved. There is a good atmosphere at the office. On the one hand, people work hard, but there is certainly time for a joke or a drink on Friday. I also started squashing weekly with a number of colleagues!
