Innovation Inspires at J-Fall 2024

Developers Gather at J-Fall
The spirit of innovation was on full display at J-Fall 2024, offering tons of inspiration and food-for-thought for our attending developers; along with the opportunity to network with the wider development community.
J-Fall – the largest annual Java conference in the Netherlands – was organised by NLJUG and held at the Pathé Ede cinema. A cozy location (think big screens and reclining seats) with a packed itinerary of expert talks on both Java and general software development topics.
With over fifty sessions to choose from, there was something for every developer, and plenty of company booths to explore, plus lunch, drinks, and the always-welcome Dutch borrel!
Cozy Seats and Cutting-Edge Ideas
With such a wide range of talks, our Keylaners were free to set their own schedules and attend talks on the topics and subjects that mattered most to them.
One standout session being “Confessions of a Shortcut-a-holic” by Guus de Wit – a practical talk on how small optimisations can lead to big results.
Guus shared how he overcame severe RSI by rethinking his keyboard usage. From remapping keys using AutoHotKey, to creating dual-function buttons and switching to a split keyboard, his changes led to a more ergonomic and efficient way of working.
Although Guus experimented with alternative keyboard layouts such as Colemak, he ultimately advised against abandoning QWERTY entirely due to its widespread use and adoption.
Overall, the sentiment of his talk was: explore, experiment, and adapt – but don’t reinvent the wheel unless you need to.
